How Can You Stay Warm Without Overheating On Autumn Rides?

Autumn is often a favourite time of year for equestrians, with the flies and heat of summer behind us, but the mud and ice of deep winter yet to make an impact. However, it can be tricky to know what to wear: a chilly morning can soon evolve into a pleasant mild day, and after some trot or canter work, you soon wish you were wearing lighter gear.

On the other hand, you can set out for a hack in bright sunshine, only for conditions to turn drizzly and windswept. So, how do you get it right?

Start with a breathable base layer

A good base layer is the unsung hero of any autumn riding outfit. Look for moisture-wicking fabrics that draw sweat away from your skin and dry quickly, so even if you’re schooling hard or out on a long hack, you stay comfortable. Avoid cotton, as it holds moisture and makes you feel cold once you stop moving.

Lightweight, fitted equestrian long sleeve tops in technical fabrics are ideal. Choose styles with stretch and thumbholes to keep sleeves in place under your jacket.

Add a thermal mid-layer for warmth

On chillier days, a thermal fleece or softshell mid-layer keeps you cosy without adding bulk. Look for styles with a two-way zip, so you can adjust easily while riding. If you’re training outdoors, a mid-layer with a brushed inner fabric adds extra warmth while still allowing freedom of movement.

Neutral tones like taupe, navy, and forest green work perfectly for autumn, and they hide the inevitable bit of arena dust!

Top it off with a weatherproof jacket

A waterproof or water-resistant riding jacket is essential once the weather turns. A lightweight quilted or softshell jacket gives warmth without weight, while a full waterproof shell keeps out wind and rain on the worst days.

Look for breathable materials with adjustable cuffs, vented backs, and a fitted cut, so you stay dry and stylish rather than swamped in fabric. Bonus points for reflective details for those darker evenings.

Choose breeches that move with you

Autumn calls for thicker, high-stretch breeches or riding tights with fleece lining or thermal panels. They’ll keep your legs warm without feeling stiff or restrictive. Silicone grip patterns help you stay secure in the saddle, especially when the weather makes things a bit slippery.

Don’t forget the finishing touches

Keep your neck and hands warm with lightweight, breathable accessories. A snood or neck warmer is safer than a scarf, and a pair of lined riding gloves will protect your fingers from chilly reins.

And finally, invest in a good waterproof over-layer for those inevitable showers. A long riding mac can save your outfit (and your mood) when the heavens open halfway through a hack.

Riding in autumn doesn’t have to mean braving the elements unprepared. With the right layers, you can stay warm, dry, and free to focus on your horse.
