Heading to Defender Burghley Horse Trials this year and wondering what on earth to wear?
There’s plenty of inspiration out there for the perfect country-chic Burghley outfit. But there’s one fairly important detail that’s easy to forget: you’re potentially going to spend most of the day walking around a very large field.
Add British September weather, uneven ground, shopping bags and a full day of watching horses into the mix, and suddenly comfort starts looking considerably more important.
So, as riders ourselves, here’s our practical guide to what to actually wear to Burghley Horse Trials in 2026 — without completely abandoning looking good.
What should you wear to Burghley Horse Trials?
There’s no general spectator dress code for Burghley, so what you wear is largely up to you.
Our biggest advice? Dress for the day you’re actually going to have.
Burghley itself recommends comfortable clothing and suitable footwear, warning that September conditions can range from hot and dry to torrential rain.
Think:
- Comfortable trousers, breeches or leggings
- Breathable layers
- A lightweight jacket or gilet
- A proper waterproof if rain is forecast
- Comfortable, weather-appropriate footwear
- A bag you’re happy carrying all day
Layers are your friend. You want an outfit you can easily adapt as the temperature changes rather than something that looks incredible at 8am and has you questioning your life choices by lunchtime.
Breeches, riding leggings or jeans for Burghley?
You absolutely don't have to wear equestrian clothing to Burghley.
But if comfort is the priority, technical riding wear makes a lot of sense.
Jeans might look great with country boots and a blazer, but personally, if we're walking around a showground all day, we'll take four-way stretch and breathable technical fabric.

What should you wear for Burghley cross-country day?
Saturday is the big one.
Burghley’s cross-country course covers more than four miles, so if you're planning to get around the course and see plenty of fences, dress accordingly.
This is not the day we'd personally choose restrictive trousers or footwear that needs “breaking in”.
A practical cross-country day outfit could be:
- Comfortable riding breeches, jeans or leggings
- A breathable baselayer or seamless riding top
- A lightweight technical jacket or gilet
- A waterproof layer in your bag
- Comfortable waterproof boots, walking shoes or trainers depending on the weather
Our rule: dress for the walking first. Make it cute second.
Your feet will thank you.
The easiest way to layer for Burghley
British weather rarely commits to one personality for an entire day, so we'd build your outfit in layers.
Start with a breathable base
A technical riding Baselayer or Seamless Riding Top works well because moisture-wicking, quick-drying fabric will help keep you comfortable when you're walking around the showground.
On a warmer day, that may be all you need.
Add a lightweight layer

Bring an actual waterproof

Looking slightly less Pinterest-worthy for ten minutes is considerably preferable to spending six hours absolutely soaked.
What shoes should you wear to Burghley?
Possibly the most important decision of the entire outfit.
Wear shoes you KNOW you can walk in.
The Burghley organisers specifically recommend practical footwear because of the terrain, and official full course walks cover more than 5km.
Depending on the weather and ground conditions, that might mean:
- Comfortable country boots
- Waterproof walking boots
- Waterproof trainers
- Wellies if conditions are particularly wet
Whatever you choose, Burghley morning is not the time to discover that your beautiful new boots start eating your heels after 4,000 steps.

1. The comfort-first Burghley outfit

Obviously, save the micro-fleece Winter Breeches for a genuinely cold forecast — we're preparing for Burghley, not an Arctic expedition.
What should you pack in your Burghley bag?
A few things we'd rather have and not need than desperately want when we're three miles from the car:
- Lightweight waterproof
- SPF
- Sunglasses
- Water bottle
- Portable phone charger
- Plasters/blister plasters
- Hair tie
- Small pack of tissues
- Tote/foldable shopping bag
And leave some room for whatever you inevitably buy in the shopping village despite promising yourself you were “just looking”.

What are people wearing to Burghley in 2026?
Country style is always going to be part of Burghley, and you'll see plenty of blazers, denim, gilets, country boots and beautifully put-together outfits.
But you don't need a completely new country wardrobe just to attend.
Our vote is for wearing something that still feels like you, works with the weather and lets you comfortably enjoy the entire day.

What do the riders wear at Burghley Horse Trials?
If you're wondering what the competitors themselves wear, their outfits are a little different from what you'll see around the shopping village.
As a three-day event, Burghley includes dressage, cross-country and showjumping — and riders dress differently for each phase.
Dressage
For the dressage phase, riders wear smart competition clothing including white or light-coloured breeches, a competition shirt, riding boots, helmet and competition jacket.
